   About the Author
Dr. Jeff Wieder received his B.S. in kinesiology (human physiology) from UCLA and his M.D. from University of California, San Diego. He completed his residency in general surgery and urology at the University of Miami. While in Miami, Dr. Wieder worked at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, where he conducted research and managed urologic issues in men with spinal cord injury. Thereafter, he completed a 2 year fellowship in Urologic Oncology at UCLA and received a certification from the Society of Urologic Oncology. Currently, he is in private practice.

During his residency, he realized that the existing urology handbooks were inadequate. They did not clearly convey important concepts in urology and were not thorough enough for use in daily practice or for board exam review. Dr. Wieder began to compile his notes and developed his own handbook, The Pocket Guide to Urology. The first edition was published in 1999 during his residency and nearly 10,000 copies were sold. In 2004, Harvard Medical School published a study in the Journal of Urology (J Urol 172: 278, 2004) in which the "...Pocket Guide to Urology was used as a reference text..." This study proved that the Pocket Guide to Urology, when used with clinical rotations, improved trainee knowledge.  In a report from the AUA residents committee in 2011, The Pocket Guide to Urology was ranked in the top 3 most useful educational materials (alongside Campbell's Urology and the AUA Self Assessment Study Program) by residents in the Mid-Atlantic Section.

In addition to the Pocket Guide to Urology, Dr. Wieder has published numerous articles and book chapters (see publications below). He was a contibuting author for UrologyHealth.org (the American Urologic Association's on-line resource for patients). Dr. Wieder served as a board member for the First International Consultation on Bladder Tumors in 2004 and helped develop the international clinical guidelines for bladder cancer. Most of his publications are related to urology; however, Dr. Wieder also enjoys creative writing and has authored poems and short stories.

Dr. Wieder graduated Magna Cum Laude from UCLA with honors from the Department of Kinesiology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma. During medical school, he received honors in many courses and clinical rotations, including urology, radiology, anatomy, and statistics. In 1998, Dr. Wieder was honored as a Traveling Scholar by the Society of Male Reproduction and Urology (SMRU) for his clinical and research achievements in men with spinal cord injury. In 2000, he won the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award. For his contribution to the AUA's UrologyHealth.org website, Dr. Wieder was awarded the Silver Worldwide Web Award of 2004 for authoring exceptional on-line health information.

Dr. Wieder has been involved in education since early in his life.  He tutored and served as a teacher's assistant in high school and college. As an undergraduate, he was a teaching fellow for Gross Human Anatomy (a position usually held by graduate students). During residency, Dr. Wieder was elected as the first resident member of the Residency Review Commitee for Urology (the division of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education that oversees the training curriculum for urology residency programs). He was elected to a second term and served for a total of 2 years on this committee. While at UCLA, he taught classes to medical students and nursing students and taught surgery to urology residents as an attending physician at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center. He continues to participate in the education of patients and physicians through community presentations, cancer workshops, and hospital based conferences.

Dr. Wieder's personal interests include creative writing and sports. In high school, Dr. Wieder won the National Scholar Athlete Award and was All-City in swimming, springboard diving, and track and field. In college and medical school, his activities included intramural sports, backpacking, river rafting, bungee jumping, and sky diving.
